Vetch Veg Pizza Night Bicycle Delivery

A good few years back Swansea City football club moved from it’s city centre ground, The Vetch, to a shiny new stadium out of town and The Vetch sat there idle for a very long time. About a year ago part of the old pitch was turned into a community allotment and named ‘Vetch Veg’.

It is pitched as an art project but I fail to see the art aspect, I used to be a community development worker and ran Swansea’s first digital storytelling project with a community artist, she looked at it as art but I saw it as a way for people to learn computer skills and at times a form of self-therapy. At the end of the day an artist will defrost their fridge and call it art so I suppose if they want to call this art then nobody will change their minds and nobody will change mine either.

Anyway, this project is a great thing and is a great use of an area that would otherwise be going to waste. Every Friday through August they are making pizzas and delivering them around the local area by bike for free, in return all they ask for is an idea for something else that the community could do with (that is the art)…

The pizzas are hand made on site using a traditional stone oven, they offer a few different options including vegetarian and vegan options…

They are then boxed up…

And handed over to Aled (and others) who then pretends he is in Premium Rush 2: Pizza Hipzza…

And zooms around delivering them to local community members who gobble them up whilst watching The Incredibles on DVD, again.

After collecting the recipient’s idea he then zooms back to get more.

I am clearly not sold on the art credentials of this project but I am 100% behind providing people with facilities to grow their own food and of course using bicycles as an environmentally sound delivery method. I hope that Vetch Veg continues to serve the local community here, it would be brilliant if more areas had similar projects and I’d love to see more bicycle deliveries on the streets of Swansea!

For more info on Vetch Veg check out their website and Facebook. If you have a bike related community project or charity event get in touch.
