Handbags at Yawn

fixed gear and road bikes

Over the last few months a handful of people have commented on how I have abandoned fixed gear and pointed their finger at me whilst talking utter nonsense. I have not abandoned fixed gear on this blog and it’s unlikely that I ever will.

Take a look at the photo up there, that’s my bike room. You’ll notice two fixed gear bikes and one road bike. I ride either of those fixed gears every day of the week, I ride the road bike a maximum of three times a week. Since I got a road bike I have posted 261 fixed specific posts and only 89 road specific ones so I honestly don’t get the comments I’ve had from people about how there is hardly any fixed gear stuff on the blog anymore.

The difference between this blog and the other fixed blogs is that I don’t feel the need to repost a load of guff that you have already seen on Prolly, what would be the point of that? In Psycho Killer David Byrne wrote…

“You’re talking a lot, but you’re not saying anything.
When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed.”

And that is a philosophy I live by with The Foot Down. I ride the All-City or the Mash every day but I don’t have to go on about it like it’s something special. I don’t believe that I know more than you do about bikes, I’m not ‘sponsored’ to ride the streets giving absolutely zero ROI, and I don’t believe that this blog is anything other than me talking shit that makes no difference to the world.

What I do know is that if I do something interesting then I will blog about it and on this blog it may appear like I only ride my road bike because I don’t post photos of my fixed rides but that is because they aren’t worth posting about. The enjoyment is internal, on the road bike the beauty of the places I ride can be captured and shared. I don’t track my fixed rides either because it’s just pointless and if you think that you’re fast when you ride 18 miles in an hour then you’re delusional.

If you want to read about the latest nothing then try a different site, I recently removed probably 80% of the blogs I was subscribing to, I have much more time to ride now, you should do the same.

Ty mate, you’re doing a sterling blog, turning the blog away from the Fixed Gear scene that was dying on its ass and just making it about cycling was a great move. My passion lies about 60% in MTB, 30% in Road (which i havent ridden in a while) and 10% in FG (which i havent ridden in over a year but im under a month away from a new bike for commuting since my CX bike got stollen) and this is one of my fav cycling blogs out there.
