Today when riding home from Sainsburys I nearly met my maker, and all because of this crazy fixed gear bike.
When I first got my road bike I was worried that it would be tricky switching between the two, going from fixed wheel to free wheel from one day to the next. I have been riding both bikes regularly for months now with no problems at all, until tonight.
I was riding along at a fair pace, my backpack full of food, when I leaned forward to pull on my right foot strap to adjust it a bit. In that split second my brain switched off, I forgot that I couldn’t stop pedalling and my face was flung forwards towards my stem as my left leg came up and around.
Had I been going faster I’m pretty sure I would have made contact with the stem, gone over the bars and fuck knows what a mess I would have ended up in. So, for all you folks out there riding fixed and free, keep that brain of yours turned up to 11!
Have you experienced anything like this? Did you escape unscathed or did you end up in the hospital?
