No Gears 3, Bristol – Report

no gears 3 fixed gear event bristol

No Gears is a Bristol based fixed gear event gang, last Thursday was their 3rd event. They booked the fanciest independent cinema in Bristol, crossed their fingers and hoped that a load of people would show up to watch ‘London to Paris’ and ‘Death Pedal 2’.

A whole load of us hung out in a poncy park before the film, a bunch of the locals were working on some tricks which was cool to watch, I’m not really into the whole trick thing but more on that later. I was genuinely surprised by the amount of people that turned up to watch the films, the cinema was not sold out but it wasn’t far off, I’d estimate that there were 2,300 people in attendance, most of whom(?) we didn’t know so fuck knows what woodwork they came out from but it was a joy to see them.

Gavin Strange is working on a scene video called BÖIKZMÖIND which I’m sure you have heard of, he showed some raw footage before the main features. It looks like it’s coming along very nicely and will surely be a banger. Any Bristol riders reading this should get in touch via the Facebook group to go out riding and get in the video.

First up was ‘London to Paris’ which I have been really wanting to see for a long long time, the film follows a bunch of riders from around the world that meet up in London and ride to Paris in time for the last day of Le Tour De France and then meet Lance Armstrong. It was only about 40 minutes long, which made me sad at first but it turned out that 40 minutes was about half an hour too long. A short film needs a decent story and some character development but this was just a bunch of crappy interviews recorded with a plastic cup attached to a bit of string attached to a camera and some riding footage. There were some funny bits, specifically the map graphic where London kept moving further and further from where it actually is each time it came on screen and the bit where one of the riders compared riding from London to Paris to the moon landings, hahahaha. When they finally get to meet Lance at the end he clearly couldn’t care less, just like I couldn’t care less about him, he couldn’t win a race for toffee anymore. As far as I know the film isn’t going to get a DVD release because of copyright issues with the music which is a good thing if you ask me, the last thing we need is another Get Up and Go.

This is getting long but don’t worry cause there are photos at the bottom…

Like I said at the top I’m really not that into the whole tricks thing for the simple reason that they are kinda lame. Yes it’s all very new and it is progressing all the time but trick videos are mostly people riding really messily towards 3 steps and doing a bar spin down them, then rolling off 6 steps, grinding a shitty small ledge and ending with another 47 bar spins. I know the stuff these guys are going is rock hard, I can appreciate that but it’s just not good to watch. I hated Death Pedal (1) so was not looking forward to this second one at all and as I expected I was bored senseless, that is until Torey’s part. Torey had always been my least favourite of all the ‘famous’ trick riders, his whole steez just made me cringe, all that hopping about looking like he was having a fit all the time, I just couldn’t bare it but his part in Death Pedal 2 was fucking awesome! He launched straight into a fast run which made everyone take notice and by the end of his section I think everyone was blown away. His final hammer was a set of steps so big that every single person in the auditorium actually shit themselves. It’s worth watching just for that set alone, I’m sure tricksters will have a different opinion and I invite you to post your own mini review in the comments.

After the films we all headed over to Millennium Square where people either stood about looking cool or tried tricks just like the ones in Death Pedal, nobody was inspired enough to cycle to the moon that night though. Although I wasn’t really into the videos the event itself was great and I think most peeps were truly surprised by the turnout. Big shout out to the No Gears crew and I’ll see you at NG4…

I tried my best to look like a fixie rider, I think I did ok, although Gary had the same idea for his outfit (see above)

I agree about the films and also the bloke who jumped the stairs, I also had only seen him vidrating backwards previous to watching this ‘film’

Agree with you about tricks ty, they look messy. Looks like a cool event though, I was thinking of coming down with a couple of mates but my nazi boss wouldn’t give me the time off.
